Do you find yourself frequently downloading documents from Edi Cloud because Office Online doesn’t support essential features like Excel Macros, Forms, or other features that are crucial to your day-to-day operations? If so, we have a solution for you! We created Edi Sidekick, a Windows application that allows you to open Office files from Edi Cloud on your desktop. Once you finish editing a file locally, it will automatically upload as a new file version into Edi.
See below for a step-by-step guide, tips, and FAQs:
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Select an office file and click “Open in desktop.”
- This will lock the file in Edi Cloud to ensure no other users are working on it while you are making changes locally.
- You will be redirected to another tab where you can:
- Download the application if it’s your first time.
- *You might need your organization's Admin to install a new application into your computer
- Wait for the document to open automatically after a few seconds OR
- Manually click on “Open in Desktop” for the same result.
- Download the application if it’s your first time.
- The Office file will open in the relevant desktop application (e.g. Excel Desktop).
- Once you’ve finished your work, you can save the document by clicking CTRL+S or the Save button and close it. If you exit without saving, there will be an alert.
- Upon closing, Edi Sidekick will automatically upload that document and add it as a new version
Tips:
- Pin the sidekick application in your task manager bar. You can add it to your pinned applications by dragging it.
- Turn your windows notifications on to be alerted when a file is successfully uploaded.
- Verify for updates by clicking on the gear icon.
- Don't work locally for prolonged periods of time! Remember, every file you are working on locally is Locked in Edi Cloud for all your co-workers. We suggest making edits to a file and getting it back to Edi Coud as soon as possible.
- If you are working on a file locally and need to step away, we suggest uploading into Edi. If it's unfinished and you don't want other co-workers working on it yet, you can add a file description or tag that lets them know it's not ready.
